Chicken Soup for the Mother and Son Soul – Book Review

As I have reviewed a book last week on raising kids outside of gender stereotypes and have received the Chicken Soup for the Mother and Daughter Soul, I had to review Chicken Soup for the Mother and Son Soul as this week’s book as it is my last one being pregnant before finding out I’d our baby is a son or daughter.

This book started on a great and touching story that may be one of my favorites out of this whole series. In it a mom volunteering overseas in an orphanage during a war is given the opportunity to literally choose the son wants out of many orphans. I read the story multiple times and it stayed with me.

The section entitled “Boys Will Be Boys” had humorous stories including the mother and son who hid a rubber mouse as a prank on each other and how it bonded them and one of a seemingly brave boy who asked to be the scariest monster ever for Halloween then was scared by his reflection. Though the mother daughter book had humorous stories as well, some of these were laugh out loud funny.

A few stories seemed especially relevant to me. As older parents to be I really liked the one about the older mom who braved a roller rink, getting the admiration of her skeptical son, though it ended in a less than ideal day and minor injury for her. I also saw myself in the mom who filled in for the dad at a little league game and was the loudest cheering parent, similar to how I would be.

This collection of stories is just wonderful, one I would recommend to any mother with one or more sons, I bet she would see herself in many of the stories as well.

Rating – five baby booties out of five
