I’ve been blessed with good health over my life, something I am very gratfeful for. As a result I do not have a lot of experience in dealing with insurance companies for myself for non routine visits. It was with great confusion that Matt and I had received a letter form our insurance company denying our ultrasound expense. We’ve been doing our best to understand the ins and ours of our insurance but it’s been confusing in the way navigating the maze below might be.
As I’d described the insurance company stated that the ultrasound was for maternity and not prenatal. So, before my last appointment OB appointment with Dr. G, as I happened to arrive quite early, I decided to go to billing.
As has happened with the insurance company, we both had a chance to speak separately. The representative told me that there was a 30% discount available if we could prove need, but that would not apply to bills the company applied to lie deductible like this one. Further, she told me that the insurance company had denied another charge for a genetic test from my blood tests the week before.
Matt arrived soon after I had started speaking to her and he talked with me while I went upstairs to check in for my apoinment. They discussed our options and the representative agreed to our a more on our account that we were contesting with our insurance to buy us some time to appeal to them.
At my appointment we told Dr. G about the insurance company and especially them arguing the charges were maternity not prenatal. In the words of my doctor he “didn’t see a difference,” and neither do we, nor had anyone else we’ve told this story to, in fact.
He told us how hard insurance companies made his job and that at moments made him want to retire. He’s helped other clients try to appeal to their insurance carriers and reminded us how lucky we are that the entire pregnancy and birth all occur during the same calendar year so I am not subject to two deductibles.
He agreed that write us a letter supporting the fact that all expenses so far have been prenatal. His letter was articulate and specific and I am greateful we have him on our side. Here is a snippet of the letter, I will keep my readers posted on my progress with this.
