20 Week OB Appointment

The second appointment of the week was with Dr. G. I had followed his directions to take several blood pressure readings for him between this visit and our last one three weeks ago. I brought the blood pressure cuff with us to make sure I was doing it right, in particular as I had gotten results that varied a lot. His nurse, Martha, helped demonstrate the proper way to put it on for us.

While waiting for my appointment I heard the schedulers booking for all the doctors in the office. It turns out Dr. G has many 10 minute appointments like the ones I have had recently. When the scheduler described him as an amazing doctor, I smiled as Matt, Candy and I all agree on that.

I had taken 6 readings at home, which I had saved in my phone. While I had said they were kind of all over the board, Dr. G seemed to think these were more uniform than I did.

The readings were also similar to the one that Martha had taken that day.

Despite the mostly uniform readings, the one I had taken on Wednesday for the anatomy scan had been quite higher. I have a few theories on this. Perhaps waiting with a full bladder and being unable to use the bathroom may have raised it. Or perhaps though I knew most of these tests came back with normal/healthy results for everyone, I was a little nervous what I would hear or even that I would accidentally see the gender. (It was written in my chart “No Gender” in big letters and circled so this was not a possibility, though I did not know how the chart was marked until the end of my appointment.) I’m told even little things like having a hard time finding parking, which I did at this location, could cause a higher result.

Dr. G confirmed that the scans which he had seen had shown nothing remarkable. He agreed with the assessment I had received on Wednesday that a fetal monitoring once a week in the last four weeks of pregnancy was a good idea due to my age. Dr. G described them as the brains and himself as the brawn for the baby, but truly, we’ve found him to be great at the brains role as well. At this appointment he measured my stomach and we were able to listen to baby’s heartbeat via Doppler. Baby’s heartbeat was 140 on Wednesday, I forgot to ask what it was at this visit. As all looked well, we are to go back again in three weeks for my next appointment.
