Wiliam’s doctor had recommended starting him with fruits then exploring vegetables. Today was the day we decided to try his first vegetable. In honor of this milestone, I put him in his Holy Guacamole vegetable onesie, a present from his Godparents, for his playtime before this meal.
Matt and I had bought two different vegetables at our last grocery shopping trip, carrots and sweet potatoes. I decided we’d start with sweet potatoes as they are of course the sweeter of the two options.
William seemed ready for this new experience.
He wasn’t opening his mouth wide at first.
I fed him just the sweet potatoes with no oatmeal mixed in at first so he could get the full flavor by itself. He did not seem impressed with his first taste of them.
A second bite produced a similar initial facial expression from him.
Yet soon he decided it was a pretty good taste. He opened his mouth wider for me to feed him.
In fact, he was ready to take the container off the high chair himself. I was curious how far he would go with it if I let him pick it up, however, I decided there would be more spilling than eating if I let him, so I took it away from his reach.
So he put his hands on mine to guide the spoon into his mouth. As far as I can tell, he only does this with foods he’s decided that he enjoys eating.
William happily ate the sweet potatoes, though he took a bit less of them than he would if I was giving him a fruit.
I look forward to trying other vegetables with him soon.
